What is it ?

The design to cost activity identifies new technical and functional solutions, that enable the enterprise obtaining structural cost reductions achieving the same level of performance.

The process involves the R&D and the operation managers, together with the responsibles of the technical areas of the company. Their goal is the improvement, the optimization and the standardization of the technical solutions to achieve the aimed functionality within the company: these new solutions can even be presented by proposals of the suppliers, deriving from a direct market research activity. Moreover the second goal is the improvement of the commercial efficiency in the buying process of the single product or service.

The results

The benefits obtained by our customer experiencing the Design-to-cost methodology in the 2006-2009 period are:

  • 30% cost savings, without any functional modification
  • Cost savings between 30% and 50% in 45% of the cases

The average saving of 29,8% derives from connected activities on multitude aspects

42% saving obtained is due to activities whose goal is the design and process optimization
